World’s Leading Aquatic Scientific Societies Urgently Call for Cuts to Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Dire consequences for aquatic resources without significant and fast action
September 14, 2020
In an unprecedented statement released today (see the section "Download" in this page), the American Fisheries Society (AFS) coordinated forces with 110 aquatic scientific societies representing more than 80,000 scientists across the world to sound a climate change alarm.
The European Federation for Freshwater Sciences (EFFS) and its federated societies, bringing together nearly 5,000 freshwater scientists across Europe, have actively participated in the preparation and refining of this statement.
The societies call for drastically curtailed global greenhouse gas emissions to avoid the worst impacts of man-made climate change to aquatic ecosystems and their ecosystem services that benefit humankind. Unless urgent action is taken to reduce emissions, scientists predict catastrophic impacts on these and human health and global economies.
Please, disseminate this message and the attached statement to your associates and, if you wish, through your personal and institutional social and scientific networks.
Thank you very much for supporting the scientist commitment against climate change.
