Winners of the EFFS Award for the best PhD Dissertation in Freshwater Sciences (2019-2020)
Dear colleagues, dear friends,
It is my great pleasure to announce the results of the European Federation for Freshwater Sciences 2019-2020 PhD Award.
The jury has decided awarding the EFFS 2019-2020 Best PhD thesis Award to:
Dr. Jorge Garcia-Girón, for his PhD thesis titled Geographical variation of aquatic macrophyte biodiversity: Towards an integration of scale and ecological organisation. This thesis was selected by the Asociación/Associação Ibérica de Limnologia (AIL, Iberian Limnological Association) and presented at the Universidad de Leon (Spain), being co-supervised by Prof. Dr. María del Camino Fernández Aláez (Universidad de León, Spain) and by Prof. Dr. Janne Matias Alahuhta (University of Oulu, Finland). Jorge will give a plenary lecture on his thesis at SEFS-12 to be held virtually in Dublin, from 25th to 30th July, 2021.
Among the 15 candidates, presented by EFFS-Federated societies from 10 European countries, the jury highlighted the high scientific quality of all works, and decided to award a second and a third prize, that will be presented as posters at the EFYR virtual stand in SEFS-12.
The second position award has been granted to:
Dr. Fredic Morgan Windsor, for his PhD thesis titled The transfer and effects of xenobiotic pollutants in freshwater ecosystems. This thesis was selected by the Freshwater Biological Association, and was conducted at Cardiff University (United Kingdom). The thesis was co-supervised by Prof. Dr. Steven Ormerod (Cardiff University, UK) and by Prof. Dr. Charles Tyler (University of Exeter, UK).
The third position has been awarded to:
Dr. Lenka Procházková, for her PhD thesis titled Exploring the diversity of snow algae using polyphasic approach. The thesis was selected by the České Limnologické Společnosti (CLS, Czech Limnological Society), and was developed at Charles University (Prague, Czech Republic). The thesis was supervised by Prof. Dr. Linda Nedbalová (Charles University, Czech Republic).
The jury was composed by five eminent European freshwater scientists:
- Prof. Dr. Alan Hildrew (Queen Mary University London, United Kingdom) - Prof. Dr. Geta Risnoveanu (University of Bucharest, Romania) - Prof. Dr. Philippe Cecchi (IRD Montpellier, France) - Prof. Dr. Sergi Sabater (University of Girona & ICRA, Spain) - Dr. Nabil Madji (University of Bielefeld, Germany)
We wish to thank all of them for their invaluable collaboration. We would also like to acknowledge the excellent job made by all candidates, which reflects the strength of the European Freshwater Sciences. It is also remarkable that half of the PhD theses were presented by women and half by men, which follows the desirable equal participation of women and men in our science
Overall marks will be sent on a different message to the EFFS-federated societies for internal use only. I kindly ask each of the societies to send the results to each of the candidates they presented, and inform them that specific comments from the jury could be provided upon request by e-mail.
Please, share this message within your societies, and encourage the members of your societies to attend our meeting SEFS-12.
Congratulations to the awardees, as well as to all candidates for their magnificent work.
Warm regards
Toni
