Winners of the EFFS Award for the best PhD Dissertation in Freshwater Sciences (2021-2022)
Dear colleagues, candidates, friends,
It is my great pleasure to announce the results of the European Federation for Freshwater Sciences 2021-2022 PhD Award.
The jury has decided to award the best EFFS 2021-2022 PhD thesis Award to:
Dr. James Alexander Orr, for his PhD thesis titled General mechanisms for non-additivity between multiple stressors at higher temporal and biological scales. This thesis was selected by the Irish Freshwater Sciences Association (IFSA) and presented at the Trinity College Dublin, being supervised by Prof. Dr. Jeremy J. Piggott. The winner will give a plenary lecture on his thesis at SEFS-13 to be held in Newcastle (UK), from 18th to 23rd June, 2023.
Among the 19 candidates, that were previously awarded as their best country’s theses for the years 2021-2022 by EFFS-Federated societies from 13 European countries, the jury highlighted the high scientific quality of all works. Consequently, it was decided to award a second and a third prize, that will be presented as posters at the EFYR stand in SEFS-13.
The second position award has been granted to:
Dr. Chloé Vagnon, for her PhD thesis titled Le silure glane (Silurus glanis) dans les grands lacs périalpins: Ecologie trophique et impacts sur les espèces résidentes (“Ecology and impacts of the European catfish in large peri-Alpine lakes”). This thesis was selected by the Association Française de Limnologie (AFL), and was conducted at Université Savoie Montblanc. The thesis was co-supervised by Prof. Dr. Jean Guillard, Prof. Dr. Victor Frossard and by Prof. Dr. Franck Cattaneo.
The third position has been awarded to:
Dr. Elizabeth León-Palmero, for her PhD thesis titled Greenhouse gases in reservoirs: from watersheds to functional genes. The thesis was selected by the Asociación Ibérica de Limnologia (AIL), and was developed at the University of Granada. This thesis was co-supervised by Prof. Dr. Isabel Reche and by Prof. Dr. Rafael Morales-Baquero.
The jury was composed by the following eminent European freshwater scientists:
- Dr. Andras Abonyi (WasserCluster Lunz, Austria) - Dr. Miguel Cañedo-Argüelles (Idaea-CSIC, Spain) - Dr. Dorothea Hug Peter (Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Switzerland) - Dr. Marina Vilenica (University of Zagreb, Croatia) - Dr. Fredric Windsor (Cardiff University, UK)
We wish to thank all of them for their invaluable collaboration. Also, we would like to acknowledge the excellent job made by all candidates, which reflects the strength of the European Freshwater Sciences. It is also remarkable that nearly 2/3 of the PhD theses selected by the EFFS-federated societies were performed by women.
Overall scores will be sent on a different message to the EFFS-federated societies for internal use only. Just in case that they do not receive this e-mail in their current positions, I kindly ask each of the societies to send the results to each of the candidates they presented, and inform them that specific comments from the jury to their PhD dissertations could be provided upon request through an e-mail addressed to the EFFS chairperson (antonio.camacho@uv.es).
Please, share this message within your societies, and encourage the members of your societies to attend our meeting SEFS-13 to be held in Newcastle from 18th to 23rd June, 2023.
Congratulations to the awardees, as well as to all candidates for their superb work, that, further to the European awardees, were already distinguished as the best nationwide theses by their own EFFS-federated societies.
Warm regards
Toni
